More About Virus Dangers

New computer viruses are created more and more frequently and become more mean and meaner.

If older viruses usually simply made your computer inoperative but it was possible to recover your data file, the viruses of today usually CORRUPT YOUR DATA FILES.

Symantec publishes new updates for NAV database every few days now -- not once in 7 - 10 days as before.

ADVICE #1: Please update the NAV database with hitting the "Live Update" button NOT every 7 - 10 days as was recommended but EVERY DAY, first thing you come to the office.

If you have a latest virus database and set your NAV to AUTO-PROTECT your computer, you are quite safe against viruses that are several days older than this virus database.

(Last week I made a survey in the department and found MANY computers where NAV had not been updated since Summer 2000 !! A few of these computers were infected with the SirCam virus and had been spreading the pest to other email addresses !!)

ADVICE #2: Do not open UNSOLICITED attachments. Open the attachments only if somebody whom you know requests doing it in a message clearly signed manually, not created by a virus-robot.

ADVICE #3: Avoid sending attachments without ULTIMATE necessity. Send only TEXT files created as advised on the Information Technology pages of the Departmental Website.
