On Use of Norton Antivirus

VCU has a site license for the Norton Anti Virus software so that the faculty and staff may use it in the office and at home. To use it at home I would advise to burn the installation on a CD and install from this CD. I have burned the NAV on a CD that I may loan to faculty/staff.

The problem with the use of NAV is that the right to update virus definitions lasts exactly one year. By the time of expiration, you will start receiving an obscure request to subscribe to something and soon no updates are allowed.

Naturally, you would and *should* refuse to subscribe on anything through the Internet!!!!!.

What you need to do when your NAV license expires is --

The installation version on the VCU website has been changed and the instructions 1--3 below do not apply to the website update anymore.
The new instructions on installation are placed on the NAV Update Page

1. Uninstall NAV from your computer.

2. Download and install the current version from VCU website (the link may be found from the Information Technology page of the DOIM website)

3. Immediately update the freshly installed NAV.

When installing, you may be requested to register -- skip this request (My advice -- never register for software or to anything on the Internet -- they *will* sell your addresses down to spammers)

When installing, do not create rescue disks, is a waste of time.

After installing, through NAV "options" turn on protection of email and protection of browser (after this Netscape's are protected automatically)

Not rarer than once a week, update virus definitions with LiveUpdate. You may set the *automatic* LiveUpdate but I would not advise it. It is like that warning in the fast food places' restrooms "Staff must wash their hands with soap after using restroom" -- we are educated people and should know to do such things without warnings.

Even when your NAV is updated and running, do not entirely rely on it. A *new* strain of virus may squeeze through this protection. Do not be that curious to open attachments sent to you -- they may be the gifts of Ulysses like yesterday gift of a nice screensaver
