VCU Medical Center
Women’s Health Center at Stony Point
The Women's Health Center at Stony Point has served as the School of Medicine's "one stop shop" for the delivery of multidisciplinary services to women in the Richmond area since 1993. With more than 20,000 annual patient visits, health promotion and disease prevention services are provided in addition to coordinated and comprehensive primary and specialty care for physical and mental health problems. The Women's Health Center serves as a model for the nation in multidisciplinary health care and is the core of the VCU National Center of Excellence in Women's Health, a competitive designation received from the US Department of Health and Human Services in recognition of its clinical excellence.
VCU Institute for Women’s Health
In 2003, the VCU Institute for Women's Health was designated a National Center of Excellence in Women's Health by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, one of only 20 in the nation. With the Women's Health Center at Stony Point as its core, the VCU Institute for Women's Health promotes clinical excellence throughout the health system, advances cutting-edge research, fosters community outreach and collaboration, enhances academic leadership roles for women, and provides training and education to improve the physical and mental health for women across the life span. Services continue to expand with the most recent addition of a comprehensive Breast Health Center - providing a full range of imaging and interventional care - and the Charlotte K. Roberts Women's Health Resource Center - providing access to specialized health information for women of all ages and their families who wish to learn more about health and wellness.
Health team
The Women's Health Center at Stony Point includes a team of physicians (obstetrics, gynecology, internal medicine, psychiatry, plastic and breast surgery, and genetics), nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurses, nutritionists, ultrasound and bone densitometry technicians and genetic counselors. Mental health services are essential and integrated into the comprehensive services available to women. A full range of screening and diagnostic breast health services are available on site, including mammography, breast ultrasound, and stereotactic biopsy. In addition, the Women's Health Center offers a bone health clinic with an expert endocrinologist and on site state of the art bone densitometry
Specialty areas
Although numerous specialties are represented within the Women's Health Center at Stony Point, some patients require referral to additional specialties. The Stony Point facility houses clinical specialists in gastroenterology, cardiology, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, sports medicine, rheumatology, dermatology, and physical therapy, among others. We have worked hard to allow women to move smoothly between the Women's Health Center at Stony Point and other clinics. The center makes specialty appointments for the patient at a time convenient for the patient and consistent with the urgency of the medical condition. Stony Point team members contact the patient's managed care provider to authorize referrals and enters the authorization into a computer network. The referral authorization is available on line to specialists throughout the academic medical center. Because the entire Stony Point facility, including the Women's Health Center, uses a single medical record system, the on-site specialists have immediate access to the primary care records within the master medical record.
