President of MCV Physicians, the clinical practice plan for more than 600 physicians
Dr. Wenzel is author of more than 500 publications, the editor of six textbooks and the lead editor of A Guide for Infection Control in the Hospital translated into seven languages. He also is a distinguished teacher — he has trained 50 hospital epidemiologists worldwide.
His work has focused on the epidemiology of hospital-acquired infections, especially bloodstream infections and sepsis. Dr. Wenzel is a nationally recognized expert on antibiotic resistance and its impact. He has won numerous national and international awards for research and teaching.
For many years he was a member of the editorial board of The New England Journal of Medicine, and since 2001 he has been the journal’s first editor-at-large.
Dr. Wenzel is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians and a charter member of the Surgical Infections Society. He is a former president of the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America and former councill or of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
From 2006-08, Dr. Wenzel was president of the International Society for Infectious Diseases.
