George W. Vetrovec , M.D.
Associate Chair for Clinical Affairs

Since 1976, Dr. Vetrovec has been on the faculty of Virginia Commonwealth University, achieving the rank of full professor in 1986. He was elected to AOA as a faculty member in 1986. Dr. Vetrovec’s major administrative duties include chair of the Division of Cardiology, director of the Adult Cardiac Catheterization laboratory and associate chair of Medicine for Clinical Affairs.

Dr. Vetrovec has served in multiple university leadership capacities including chairing three search committees for departmental chair as well as participating in three strategic planning processes. Noteworthy has been his commitment to philanthropy, spearheading a fundraising campaign that secured more than $6 million in professorships and research funding for the VCU Heart Center. For this he received the first W. Robert Irby Philanthropic Leadership Award presented by the MCV Foundation.

Dr. Vetrovec’s scholarly interests involve improving the management of coronary artery disease, particularly related to catheterization and interventional techniques. He has had ongoing funding for clinical trials for more than 20 years. He has authored or co-authored more than 150 papers, eight book chapters and has edited two texts on interventional cardiology, and in addition to serving on multiple cardiovascular journal editorial boards.

Other major educational achievements include co-chairing the ACC Interventional Board Review Program for five years as well as the ACC Interventional Program at its Annual Scientific Meeting for two years. Dr. Vetrovec currently serves as a consultant to the FDA New Cardiovascular Devices Panel and is a member of Cardiovascular Disease Subspecialty of the American Board of Internal Medicine, the national qualifying board for cardiovascular specialists. He also is a fellow and a past president of the Society for the Cardiac Angiography and Interventions, the Association of Professors of Cardiology and the Association of University Cardiologists.

In addition to administrative, research and teaching activities, Dr. Vetrovec is an active clinical cardiologist, who performs catheterization and interventional procedures. In 1997, he was voted Clinician of the Year by his physician colleagues in the university practice. Woodward/White and numerous other organizations have recognized him as one of the best doctors in the U.S. for more than 10 years.
