MCV Department of Internal Medicine has many faculty members serving at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (see the list in the right hand column)

The Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center is a modern, 474-bed complex whose Medical Service offers a full range of primary and tertiary care services both inpatient and outpatient including:

  • Intensive care Acute patient care Geriatrics and nursing home care
  • Continuous ambulatory care

Many programs are integrated with those at MCVH. All of the medical subspecialties are represented.

  • The Hospice Unit. The Dialysis Unit. The Women's Clinic. The Infectious Diseases/AIDS Clinic. The Home Infusion Team. The Electrophysiology Laboratory. The Noninvasive Cardiac Laboratory. Interventional and Diagnostic Cardia Catheterization Laboratories (including laser angioplasty). The Heart Failure/Heart Transplant Unit. The Lung and Liver Transplantation Programs. Employee Health. The Comprehensive Cancer Center. A new state-of-the-art Endoscopy Suite
  • The Telemedicine Program

Research is performed in:

  • Cardiac baroreceptor physiology, Bacterial and fungal genetics, Molecular epidemiolog, Coagulation disorders, Osteoporosis, Cholesterol metabolism, Sexuality in the elderly, Ion transport in the kidney and intestine, Antibiotic resistance and new drug evaluation, Cardiac electrophysiology
  • Molecular biology

Medical Grand Rounds and an active didactic and interactive conference schedule enhance and support the housestaff training programs. Medical Service physicians are heavily involved in student and housestaff teaching.
