Virginia Commonwealth University John E. Nestler, M.D., is vice chair of the Department of Internal Medicine and chair of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Dr. Nestler also is the William G. Blackard Professor of Medicine, and holds joint appointments as professor in both the departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Pharmacology and Toxicology. Dr. Nestler is program area head of reproductive health for the Interdisciplinary Women’s Health Research Program at VCU.
Dr. Nestler received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at VCU. His postdoctoral training included fellowships in endocrinology at the University of Pennsylvania and VCU.

As principal investigator, Dr. Nestler is responsible for three active National Institutes of Health-funded grants studying the role of insulin resistance in the polycystic ovary syndrome. He has been a principal investigator on numerous research projects, receiving funding from grant sources that include the NIH, the Juvenile Diabetes Association, the American Diabetes Association, and the Diabetes Research & Education Foundation.

Dr. Nestler has written numerous articles and abstracts for U.S. and European publications, such as the New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Circulation, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Diabetes, and Diabetes Care. He is a member of a number of professional associations, including the American Society of Clinical Investigation, and is past president of the Androgen Excess Society and the Virginia Affiliate of the American Diabetes Association. His global affiliations have included the Endocrine Society, ADA, AACE, ASRM, and the Worldwide Hungarian Medical Association.
