Michael Edmond is Professor of Internal Medicine, Epidemiology and Community Health. He also is the Hospital Epidemiologist and Chair of the Division of Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Edmond is a graduate of the West Virginia University School of Medicine (M.D.), the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health (M.P.H. in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology), and Virginia Commonwealth University’s L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs (M.P.A. in Executive Leadership). He was a resident and chief resident in internal medicine at West Virginia University Hospitals. He then completed a fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a fellowship in hospital epidemiology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine.

Dr. Edmond's interest in medical education began while serving as a chief medical resident. From 1995 through 2001 he served as director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at VCU. During this period the quality of the residency program improved dramatically. Since 1998 he has served as associate chair for education. In this position he oversees all the educational programs in the Department of Internal Medicine.

He has received numerous teaching awards from medical students and residents. He also has served as Director of the Preventive Medicine Residency Program and currently serves as its Associate Director. He has coordinated three RRC site visits, each of which resulted in five-year accreditation cycles (the maximum achievable).

Dr. Edmond's research focuses on the epidemiology of hospital-acquired infections and the public policy implications of infection control, and he continues to direct the Hospital Epidemiology Fellowship Program. He has published 250 papers, abstracts and book chapters.
