Welcome from the residency leadership team
Thank you for selecting the VCU Department of Internal
Medicine for your residency training. We welcome you and look forward
to knowing you
personally and professionally.
Our program is rigorous, and you will be challenged intellectually. With
our diverse patient population and educational emphasis on advanced bedside
clinical
skills, our graduates become excellent diagnosticians. On rounds and
in our conferences we incorporate the proper use of epidemiological principles,
an understanding of the basic biology of health and disease, the successful
use
of information technology, and the utility of a bioethics structure in
resolving
complex issues. Because we think that the physician-patient relationship
is critical to preserve, we value and teach excellent communication skills.
Beyond the skills needed to be an excellent physician, we also will emphasize
critical thinking and advocate a culture of inquiry where excellence
is sought and mediocrity challenged, where innovation is valued and dogma
questioned,
and where you create your own vitality and vibrancy by pursuing lifelong
learning.
