Richard P. Wenzel, M.D., M.Sc.
Professor and Chair
Richard P. Wenzel is a world-renowned investigator, academic author and editor, and skilled clinical teacher. More than that, he is a friend and a mentor to the internal medicine housestaff. He spends time every day with the residents — at the bedside, in conferences, writing manuscripts, attending on the wards. He has trained 50 hospital epidemiologists worldwide.
He has authored more than 450 publications, and served as the editor of five textbooks as well as the lead editor of “A Guide for Infection Control in the Hospital.”
He has served many national organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians and the Surgical Infections Society. In addition he is a former president of the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America and former councilor of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. In March 2004 named President-elect (2004-2006) of the International Society for Infectious Diseases. From 2006 to 2008 serves as president of the society.
In addition to his departmental responsibilities, he serves as president of MCV Physicians, the clinical practice plan for over 600 physicians at the VCU Medical Center.
