Preventive Medicine Residency Program

Practicum Year

The focus of the practicum year is to gain exposure to and experience in the practice and administration of public health and clinical preventive medicine. The practicum year consists of four required 2-month rotations, and four elective months as described below.

The required rotations are:

(1) Health System Administration,

(2) Urban Public Health Practice and Administration,

(3) Suburban Public Health Practice and Administration, and

(4) Epidemiology, Surveillance, and Outbreak Investigation.

Elective offerings include:

Tuberculosis Control, Public Health Preparedness for Bioterrorism, Healthcare Epidemiology, Public Health Infectious Diseases, Toxicology and Environmental Health, Occupational Medicine, and Healthcare Policy.

Goals

The goals of the Residency Program are to:

  • Study disease processes as they occur in communities and in defined populations
  • Stimulate practices that will advance health by promoting health-enhancing environments and behaviors with respect to the community and individual
  • Prevent disease and injury
  • Promote screening for disease making possible early diagnosis and treatment
  • Foster habilitation and rehabilitation of persons with disabilities

Objectives

Upon completion of the residency program, the resident should be able to:

  • Apply biostatistical principles and methods
  • Recognize and apply epidemiologic principles and methods
  • Plan, administer, and evaluate health and medical programs and evaluate the outcomes of health behaviors and medical care
  • Recognize, assess, and control environmental and occupational health
  • Apply and evaluate primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention
  • Assess population and individual health needs
