• To assess the epidemiologic & randomized, controlled trial data that link high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (C) as an independent risk factor in the genesis of coronary heart disease (CHD).
• To review pharmacologic strategies designed to augment low levels of HDL-C in patients with CHD, focusing in particular on the role of extended-release niacin.
• To highlight the important clinical imperative of directing dyslipidemic pharmacotherapy to dual targets-both lowering elevated levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and augmenting low levels of HDL-C-to optimize outcomes.
