Fellowship training

The Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship training program at Virginia Commonwealth University is fully accredited by the Residency Review Committee of the American Council on Graduate Medical Education.

This is a three-year fellowship in pulmonary disease and critical care; although occasionally fellows have trained with us for one year of critical care to combine with training in cardiology or another medicine subspecialty. The fellow’s time is divided between VCUHS/MCV Hospitals (a university, tertiary care and level one trauma center) and the McGuire Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Plenty of time is allotted to pursue clinical electives and research opportunities, with an emphasis on flexibility to develop individual interests and career plans.

There are fifteen full-time faculty, all board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary and critical care. We currently have 6 fellows but are expanding to a total of 9 over the next two years.

A full range of support services and collaborative training programs is offered at Virginia Commonwealth University. Strong clinical and research programs include pulmonary hypertension, emphysema, acute lung injury, and interventional pulmonology. Chest radiology is also especially strong. Fellows have major patient care and teaching responsibilities, leading a house staff team under faculty supervision, and regularly presenting at teaching conferences.

Both our faculty and fellows are frequently recognized and rewarded for their teaching. A half day clinic per week continues throughout the three years. Lung Transplantation is active in both hospitals.

There is no in house night call, but on call Fellows return at night when needed. Research by fellows is required and faculty members are eager to have fellows join ongoing or new projects.
