Endocrinology and Metabolism Fellowship

Education and research

The division includes faculty with interests in all areas of clinical endocrinology. Rounds are conducted daily, and trainees and faculty attend at least two clinics weekly. At least two staff members are present at each clinic.

A major teaching conference is held weekly, in addition to a patient management conference at the end of each clinic. Didactic sessions are held weekly. A research conference is held monthly.

Major clinical studies

  • Adipose tissue distribution and its relationship to morbidity
  • Role of insulin in the polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Cellular mechanisms of insulin action
  • Endocrine causes of hirsutism and hyperandrogenism
  • New methods of diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases
  • Regulation of hepatic glucose output

Research

  • Cellular mechanisms of insulin signal transduction
  • Insulin regulation of human adrenal and ovarian steroidogenesis
  • Regulation of gluconeogenesis and hepatic glucose output
  • Regulation of insulin receptor and leptin gene expression
  • Renal glucocorticoid metabolism via P450 enzymes
  • Role of ion channels in pancreatic insulin release

The division plays a very active role in clinical investigations in the General Clinical Research Center. Residents and fellows are encouraged to participate in many ongoing basic and clinical research projects.

For 2009: Two positions are available. All applications should go through ERAS.

  • November 15, 2007: Applicants may apply to December application cycle programs.
  • December 1, 2007: ERAS PostOffice opens to December application cycle programs for downloading.
  • May 31, 2008: ERAS PostOffice will close to prepare for the 2009 season.

The negotiated rate at the Crowne Plaza is $115 plus taxes and parking (if necessary). For Endocrinology fellowship applicants, The program will offset $75 of this expense for reservations at the Crowne Plaza. A block of rooms is reserved for VCU For Endocrinology fellowship candidates. However, to assure room availability, we encourage you to book early. Rooms are released 30 days in advance if not reserved. After that time, the negotiated room rate remains valid, though subject to availability.
