Secure Settings for LotusNotes
Desktop Email Client

Some email messages sent by viruses and certain malicious mailers may be loaded with program scripts that would install and run on your computer causing damage.

To prevent this kind of infection, it is recommended to turn off execution of active elements in email programs.

Usually, by default, regular email clients have these features turned off. Yet, in the LotusNotes Desktop client they are activated.

This is how you can disactivate active scripts in LotusNotes Desktop Client:

Open the menu item
File | Preferences | User preferences

1) In the window "Additional Options" uncheck:
- Enable Java applets
- Enable JavaScript
- Enable Java access from JavaScript

After this, malicious code embedded in email massages will not execute and you are secure from this kind of danger.

2) In the "location preferences" find Internet Browser
select Other
find path to Firefox browser installed on your computer
(this is usually "c:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe")
Click "Save & Close" button to save the changes

Now the Firefox browser that should be your default Internet browser will be automatically launched to view the links imbedded in email messages. Using Microsoft Internet Explorer is a very insecure way to open any webpage, particularly such as may be embedded in an email message.

The switch is easy!

Faculty and Staff on the VCU Lotus Notes email are recommended to use Mozilla Thunderbird instead of Lotus Notes Desktop or Web Clients
