Faculty members
Of the 14 faculty members, eleven are certified in Rheumatology, and three in both subspecialties. Three faculty members are among about 100 physicians nationwide who are certified in Clinical and Laboratory Immunology. Four faculty members are full time research investigators.
Clinical areas
An active program of clinical trials continuously tests new agents for the treatment of rheumatic and allergic diseases. The division also has a diagnostic immunology lab that performs special tests to assess mast cell disorders such as systemic anaphylaxis and systemic mastocytosis.
Subsections
The division has the responsibilities for patient care and teaching in two clinical subspecialties.
- Rheumatology: including rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases in both children and adults.
- Allergy and Immunology: including asthma, allergic and primary immunodeficiency diseases.
Research areas
Sponsored research includes programs in the microbiology of mast cells and the genetics of rheumatic diseases.
Fellowship training programs
The division offers two fellowship training programs leading to certification in rheumatology and in allergy and immunology.
Other points of interest
All are invited to the weekly Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology Journal Club and Grand Rounds, which are held at noon and 1 p.m., respectively, on Fridays in the VCU Medical Center’s Learning Center from September through May.
