About the Division Chair
Suzanne R. Lavoie M.D. has been appointed the Interim Chair in September 2007.
About the division
The division hosts an active hospital epidemiology program that conducts numerous studies investigating the epidemiology of nosocomial infections. Five faculty members maintain active research programs in this area. Other research foci include staphylococcal pathogenesis, antimicrobial resistance, novel therapies for endocarditis, and clinical trials assessing the efficacy of new antiviral, antiretroviral, antifungal and antibacterial compounds.
The division maintains very active consultation services at VCU Medical Center and the McGuire VA Medical Center, as well as busy outpatient clinics. Housestaff participate as integral members of the consult service, where they are part of a team consisting of infectious diseases attending physicians and fellows, medical students and clinical pharmacists.

Faculty members
The division has 12 faculty members who practice at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center and McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Five infectious disease fellows at various stages in their training also practice within the division. Four of the faculty are supported by competitive federal or Veteran’s Administration grants that fund research in the treatment and management of opportunistic infections in AIDS patients, interventional strategies in the care of AIDS patients and the molecular pathogenesis of staphylococcal infections. The division faculty members share a commitment to teaching medicine both by didactic lectures and at the bedside. Active affiliate faculty members in the departments of pathology, microbiology and immunology, and pharmacy assist full-time faculty members in both clinical and research endeavors. The Division of Infectious Diseases has a 28-year positive and productive relationship with the School of Pharmacy.
