About the Division chair 
Arun J. Sanyal, M.D.
Arun J. Sanyal leads the Division of Gastroenterology faculty. His research interests include portal hypertension, iron and calcium absorption from intestine, bile acid absorption and its regulation, and the role of transhepatic portosystemic shunts in therapy of portal hypertension and cites.
About the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition
The Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center has one of the largest academic gastroenterology groups in the U.S. Twenty adult and three pediatric gastroenterologists work in close collaboration with specialists in gastrointestinal pathology, radiology, oncology and surgery to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art medical care to patients with digestive disorders. Nutrition Section (804) 828-4060
- Clinical assessment of nutritional status, including indirect calorimetry.
- Consultation regarding management of adult patients with special nutritional needs inpatient and outpatient programs for treatment of eating disorders (anorexia and obesity).
- Enteral nutrition including state of the art access techniques for percutaneous enteral feeding. Inpatient and home parenteral nutrition.
Therapeutic Endoscopy and Motility Section (804) 828-8508
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography for applications including diagnsotic imaging, sphincterotomy, extraction of biliary and pancreatic stones, cytology, and biliary manometry.
- Endoscopic ultrasonography for applications including EUS-guided biopsy for diagnosis and staging of cancer and evaluation of intra-and extramural lesions.
- Photodynamic therapy for gastrointestinal dysplasia and malignancy.
- Laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy for diagnosis of early gastrointestinal cancers.
- Evaluation and treatment of motility disorders, including constipation, fecal incontinence, dysphagia, gastroparesis and non-cardiac chest pain.
Hepatology and Liver Transplantation Section (804) 828-4060
- Liver transplantation evaluation, pretransplant management and post-transplant care.
- Treatment of chronic liver disease, including hepatitis (B, C) and primary billiary cirrhosis management of fulminant hepatic failure, including use of isolated hepatocyte transplantation for temporary liver support.
- Management of complications of cirrhosis including TIPS for treatment of ascites and variceal hemorrhage, new chemotherapeutic agents, and intraoperative cryotherapy for hepatocellular carcinoma.
- A Liver Center at VCU Medical Center was established in 2002 to facilitate basic research regarding liver biology, pathophysiology of liver disease, immunology of hepatic transplantation and liver-directed gene therapy.
